At first I also really couldn't get into it mainly because I just couldn't find the right champions to start with. Maybe you should read up on the champions from the free week then give them a test? Also if your friends are quite a high level, you will find it hard because you will be against more experienced players, so sometimes you should play alone so you get matched up with people of your own skill level in order to improve.
