Add Friend Problem

Hi, I just downloaded the World of Warcraft starter edition. I wanted to know why whenever I would add a friend I would get an error saying "player not found" on the message log on the bottom left hand side. I tried there email and there character name and no go. I know for a fact I'm typing it in right, so what could be the problem?
I assume its either a starter edition thing.
Or a level requirement as I am only a level 1.
Help would be very much appreciated.

Possibly from a different realm or your trying to add a real id which starter account can't do.
