It's doable but it'd just be not worth it on your part.

Can you do it? Yes, i've been playing with an open xbox for over a year with no problems. I do have a modded fan though

I left my xbox open for over a year. It's safe, but not recommended as many things could go wrong.

well i always had my xbox open, i left it that way after i hot swapped with a ISO disk and i just ended up leaving it like that. It ended lasting a LONG time for me(but you know i would clean it and used compressed air to) lasted me almost a year but then it gave out because i had the vary FIRST xbox and i needed to upgrade to a newer one.

I would say it would be ok if you know how to clean it and Make sure you have NOTHING above it that might fall down on it
