So I made a topic a couple of days back about how i had found the perfect laptop for me (ideapad y500) but couldn't get a model with good specs within the UK..

Well I found a few sellers on eBay that will ship them to the UK, still far more expensive and less specs than they are in US, but the best I can get in the UK

So they have a few different models with different specs, I was just wondering which of these 2 is best (most powerful) they all have the same GPU, processor, resolution, etc, only differences are the HDD and RAM

1:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

RAM: 12 GB
HDD: 1 TB (5400 RPM) (and a 16 GB SSD, apparentally for "audio"?)

Price: 831.65 (with shipping)

2:

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

RAM: 8 GB
HDD: 1 TB (7200 RPM <--)

Price:

833.88 (with shipping)

So basically yeah, 2nd one is less ram, no SSD, but it has a 7200 RPM HDD instead of 5400, and I heard this is very benificial, especially for music production, but then again so is having a lot of RAM

For those who didn't see my last topic, main use of this laptop will be for music production and gaming, need something i can take around with me, like down to studios, friends houses, on the bus/train/plane (I already have a desktop)

You have to customs as well - which could take the price to 1.2k GBP.

Not worth it. Just go to the Lenovo website.

What exactly do you want the laptop for?

I'm pretty sure customs isn't 400GBP..!

OP: They're both pretty terrible for their price, get a desktop if you're looking for a good computer. Laptops only have 1x30mm fan so they overheat way too often and easily. The 2nd laptop has a better HDD and enough RAM, but the first one has an SSD which is much better than a HDD, just that the HDD on the first is not as good as the 2nd one's HDD.

**EDIT** Apologies, just read the last paragraph. The 1st will be better for music production but neither are very good for gaming.

Take into account it is a SLI (Dual) 650m, basically the equivalent of a single GTX 670MX, it can still run most games on high specs with good fps, even crysis/bf3 can run on high with 30+fps

Also I don't see how these are "pretty terrible" for the price, they have great reviews, and are known for being great value for money, all laptops are a tonne more expensive than their desktop counterparts, but they have to pack all that power into a small package, doesn't come easy

Also, @Diaboli, please read the full topic before replying -.-, as I said, they do not sell these on the lenovo UK site, also i said what i wanted it for at the bottom of the topic.

Also, i forgot to take into account customs etc but surely it can't be that much? ffs why does the UK only have shit laptops with shit specs, so much hassle

I said that neither of these will be very good for gaming because gaming on laptops is just pretty sucky(IMO) but I would recommend the 1st one if anything since it's much better for music production. They're pretty terrible for their price because they suck for gaming and overheat. The only reason laptops are dearer is because people prefer them and the sellers can get away with higher prices, you could easily build a better desktop for that price. I'm also pretty sure that the full delivery price includig customs will be 45GBP or whatever the delivery is. I didn't say that you should go to the lenovo website?

Sorry I meant to put @Diaboli, not you, will edit it now

Anyway I doubt this one overheats, apparently it cools really well, also not all gaming laptops overheat o-o just the ones that have a shitty cooling system

and as I said, I have a desktop, I need a laptop, of course if I had neither I would go for the desktop first, but sadly all laptops are mega expensive, nothing i can do

Oh right, I got SO confused. Laptops ALWAYS end up overheating. No matter how good the 'cooling system' isbecause they only have one small fan which collects dust and causes the computer to begin overheating. To be fair, you can always open your laptop up every so often and clean the dust out of it. Like I said though, the 1st laptop is definitely the better one. You will want to install Windows 7 though instead of Windows 8.

skip to 1:30, talks about its nifty little dust cleaning tool, used from time to time and i'm pretty sure it will be fine

Also I'm pretty sure the SLI gpu only works with win 8, but i've seen a lot of footage of it and i'm pretty sure i will get used to it eventually

Awh,okay, that seems fine then.I would definitely go eith the 1st option. As long as you keep it on solid surfaces when using it and clean the dust out everys o often, you'll be fine. Windows 8 isn't really good for gaming but after you get used to, it should be okay, I suppose.

BO2 with everything at max/ultra and 1080p good enough for me xD, doesn't have problems running crysis or battlefield at high settings either (probably not ultra though) but i don't mind
