I've ordered a new motherboard but it has 4 pin fan connectors I have 3 pin fans
can I put a 3 pin fan in a 4 pin socket

Simple answer: Yes you can. Make sure you line the pins up correctly, for example when putting a 3pin on a 4pin slot the left most pin should not be covered.
