I think it did exist at one point, just not to the magnitude that Plato described it, a small shipping island sinking seems more plausible than a huge city on a huge island which sank.

The island probably held a place in Plato's heart, which is why he exaggerated its magnificence.

It's all speculation though.

Most people think that the city was actually built underwater. But you make a good point with it being a small shipping island that got swept away by the sea.I also found a very interesting documentary on the so-called mythical city of Atlantis.

Yes. Not exactly sure where or when, or why... But it existed. It could have been built under water, or a flood could have caused it to go down.

There might have been a place named Atlantis. But so much of the ocean is unexplored and we know so little.

I think it's plausible. Not necessarily to the magnitude that is described, but an important part in society either way.

EDIT:
Let me clarify.

*It played an important part in society either way.*
I didn't mean it's necessarily important now.
