can i change the volume of different windows, eg have google chrome muted but minecraft loud? thanks in advance

Go to Control Panel and click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon, Navigate to the Audio tab.

To my knowledge and research, this is not possible. XP doesn't support independent volume functions and I am yet to come across and software that was developed for that reason. If this is something that really bothers you, it may be time to consider upgrading.
