I have had my laptop for a few years and it is really slow. If I was to factory reset it, it would be like it was new right? If not, could someone clarify what exactly factory resetting does?

Factory resetting it is a complete waste you'd lose everything. You should have been doing regular maintenance on it to keep it functioning to the best of its ability.

I wouldnt do that since it will delete all your files.

Use these programs to clean up your computer.

In a sense yes. I did a factory restore on the laptop Im on now, and it make it 10x faster. But than a month later, I had all my old stuff on it again, so its slow again :L

But just remember, like Lucritius said, it deletes EVERYTHING!
