You can upgrade your free account to the actual version, and still keep all the characters on the free account you made.

You would either need to buy the base game from a store, I recommend the battle chest to get some expansions, or buy the digital version through the online store. It will include instructions how to upgrade your account, as well as a free month of game time in the base version.

I would recommend buying it online through their store, as it is on sale for five dollars.

Lets get this all straightened out:

Battle chest is needed to be bought before membership can be added onto your account.


when upgrading to battlechest you get 1month for free (or that is the case with CD/box copies not sure on digital)

The reason they let you get to 20 and have all the dlc etc already installed is for compatability and to help get you hooked.

you wont need to make a new account to add the battle chest just sign in on battle.net and navigate to its shop area and purchase a license.
