I am waiting for a friend to update his mod from 1.5.2, and I don't know how long it may take. I was told the new launcher allows you to change versions of minecraft, so my question.. Is it possible to update right now, and still keep my current modified 1.5.2 jar?

Honestly haven't got a clue.
But what I've done is keep both launchers and just renamed my 1.5.2 jar to minecraft 1.
The new 1.6 will create a new minecraft.jar when updated so when you want to go back to the 1.5.2, just rename them both.
Annoying to do, but I didn't see any other way.

If you keep your old launcher, you should be fine to use it to be able to use your modified .jar files.
I had downloaded the new launcher, and played on 1.6.1, before using the old launcher to go back to my modified .jar from before.
I would make a backup of the files in another folder called "Modified Files" or something similar just in case this isn't the same for everyone. At least this way you can just copy and paste all of those files to restore your modified client.
