I'm pretty sure all you did was hotswap and install the mods to your usb rather than your HDD

Technically you can get a simple trainer to work online but it is nothing more than a cheat menu that has been glitched into the multiplayer phone with hex editing. You can't really do much with it. Not sure if it still works after the patch but that used to be the top of the line stuff before scripts.

Oh yeah I remember that, I'm sure they patched those by now.

Yea most likely. Those were the fun days when you didn't have to worry about god mode and freeze cars.

There used to be where you could put mods onto your USB, plug it in to the console and play a simple trainer online. In the latest patch some of the trainer's stopped working. If you are trying to USB mod GTA4, it is very possible for Campaign. But, for multiplayer, you can find some trainers online. But, take note because of the latest patch some things in most trainers will not work. Also USB mods are NOT stealth patched like ISO mods so you do have a greater chance of getting banned than doing ISO mods. Hope this helped!
