Both have their own pros and cons:
iPhone/iOS:
Pros:
-iOS feels much more organized, polished, and smooth
-App Store (better quality apps and variety)
-Jailbreaking (IMO, VERY big factor)
Cons:
-No freedom with customizations and such (unless jailbroken)
-Only Apple makes iOS products, whereas Android is everything else that isn't iOS or Blackberry
Android:
Pros:
-At the beginning, the main reason people got Android devices was because of its flash support, but now that it's gone, I don't know if this count as a pro, but whatever
-Third party/External downloads
-More customizable
-More technical OS allows for more things to do
-Expandable memory
-Larger variety of phones
Cons:
-OS is simple, but almost seems a bit lazy with its appearance and transitions
-Half the people that use Androids barely know how to use it to its full potential
-Google Play store is not very good with apps and such
Android IS the better one if you look all of the things it can do, but many people don't know how to do half of the stuff the device can do. I prefer my iPhone though mainly because of phone's capabilities once the it's jailbroken. When jailbroken, it can do FAR more things than an Android can do in terms of customizations and preferences (customization being the main defense for Android users).

As of now Android is better. But it depends on your pref.
Apple is for apps only. While Android is for customization to the phone rather than just some apps.
Of course, this is like who's better Xbox or PS. But since Apple haven't release any new phones, android is currently leading.

I don't know why everyone skips over the third mobile OS.
I personally have used iOS since iOS 3, and have tried androids, and also used both Windows Phone 7 & 8.
I recently sold my iPhone 5 and brought a Lumia 925 (WP8). It is an excellent platform which I highly suggest people try if your going to buy a new phone, rather than just be a sheep and follow the trends.
Seriously, try it out, and look at Nokia's hardware they use for Windows Phone. They actually innovate rather than the same phone for 5 years (iPhone) or differently named cheap plastic (galaxy) every year.
They just released a 41MP Windows Phone based on their 808

Yeah, thats its only downside really. Out of the box it will do alot of things that you will need seperate apps for on other platforms, and personally I think the stock apps are better than any other app you will get on another device.
One thing that people do fail to realise though is that whilst there are less apps, the apps you are missing are usually the ones you download and use once and then never even notice again.

Hey, I own a rooted android phone and have to say it is better suited to my preferences than iOS, android offers soo much more customization and freedom in terms of the visual aspects and performance of the device. The ability to download videos and apps from outside the appstore is also important to me and android provides this flawlessly. Sending music and other files between my phone and PC using bluetooth is also important and my HTC can easily send a fairly large file in seconds, whereas iOS does not allow you to send any files, bluetooth can only be used to stream music to a speaker.
Where I'm from the iPhone is seen as a status symbol, if you own one, people think you're absolutely stinking rich. People take out their iPhones at every opportunity to try and show it off. An iPhone 5 can be bought new for 550 in Britain, my HTC One was bought for 480. In my opinion the prices should be the opposite way around because the HTC packs a wayyy bigger punch than the iPhone.
Not forgetting windows phones which are ever becoming more popular. My brother has a windows phone and the only complaint he has is the appstore is lacking way behind android and iOS. His phone was very cheap, half the price of my HTC, yet his camera is better than mine and no doubt better than the iPhone.
Thanks, have a good day.
