Real game developers do not just copy someone else's scripts. Its a good way to get started but you cant just edit code without knowing any yourself, He would still need to learn before trying to edit someones script. And even after editing you might aswel of just made your own because you will pretty much have to rewrite the whole code just to make it different from the game you copied anyway

Are you implying call of duty and other games aren't "real game developers"? After all the call of duty engine is 85% of quake 3's engine.

We are talking about code, not the game engine used to develop the game

I first started using game maker 6.1 and liked the idea of the simplicity of it, all you had to do was give an image and add it to an object and give that object commands, then I moved on to some different engines such as Unity, CryEngine and Unreal Engine (which I still am learning.) I would start with flash based games and start with the latest version of Game Maker studio:

And when you reel comfortable using this and have made some basic games move on to more advanced things.

I would personally, buy programming books, old fashioned i know but in my experience they have the best information in them.

They give example programs that, to start with, you will copy them out word for word,

Then as you get a little more competent you can start editing some of the values, for example instead of 10 points per goal, make it 20. So on and so on.

You will then get a little more competent and you can start changing some of the rules.

Soon you will start learning rules and be able to make your own game from scratch. In programming practice makes perfect is key.

Good luck,
Lewis
