i have a pentium 4 sitting around the house and the motherboard got water damaged and was wondering where i could find a compatible board to put the processor to good use?

You have a Intel Pentium Processor, so intel motherboards will work.

but which socket or are they backwards compatible?

A pentium 4 uses Socket 478.

It might be socket 775 as well. Check the model number on the IHS.
