You should look at Unity 3D, it's a free game engine with a lot of the features you'd find in the more expensive game engines. It's really easy to use and you can create some good games in a short amount of time.

You can make anything with Unity 3D also so whether you want 2D, 3D or 2.5D side-scrollers it can be done.

Id say start with game maker, it will allow you to start thinking in a logical sequence then move to something more powerful such as unity.

Try scratch, it's an easy way to learn the very basics of game development then take a look at c# and then download unity.

Unity is the way to go for starters. It's easy to get started with and there's a lot of documentation on their web page on how to actually use it and do some pretty cool things. Just be careful about how you publish your game. If you're looking to hand it out for free you're golden, but if you want to charge for it think again as the licensing for a commercial version of Unity is very expensive.
