This concept is actually harder to explain than I originally thought.

I'll give two examples:

My friend asks me and a group of friends to go to a park on the other side of town several times during the day. It's about a minute from his girlfriend's house. It's clear that he wants to go and see her. So why lie when your friends would be happier if you asked 'Can I quickly go and see my girlfriend?'

A former work friend of mine got dragged 70 miles out of her way to go to some meeting. It was only for people who were under-performing and my work friend was doing great. The boss says 'Oh you can pick up x and y on the way'... x and y are obviously not their names - they also do not possess a car... Why does my ex boss insist on lying to my work friend saying they have to attend the meeting.. Why not just say 'Would it be okay if you gave x and y a lift as they don't have a car and are struggling to make a meeting that could be beneficial to them?'

This angers me so much

I get what you are saying but it would bother me they are just beating around the bush, which I do say could get annoying if the do it a lot.

They could just tell the truth. It's simpler.

in some cases I agree with you. stuff like you said it would be easier if you told the truth. however some things lying is easier. for some people that know me, they know I live a secret life... my TTG/xbox life. using Skype and snapchat even texting to communicate with some of my friends. my parents are 100% against that, so I just dont tell them. if they ask who im talking to I lie to stay out of trouble. im pretty deep in this lie and can't really go back now. my biggest fear is my mom yelling, so I avoid it. can you blame me?

Obviously it depends on how serious it is.. I understand completely where you're coming from and would be more supportive of my friends doing it if it was about something more serious. But my two examples were a little silly and unnecessary
