Find a trusted seller, buy any jtag you want, buy a couple of games that you wanna host on or if you already have them don't. Keep the rest of the money to get it repaired cause jtag's don't last forever

trinity dual nand RGH with 320gb HDD and a 500gb ext HDD... thats a decent but basic setup that will have a good rate of reliability... in my opinion id avoid the jtags due to them being older consoles... xbox elite and newer models dont red ring and if they do it very very rare providing you dont hurt it with junk and bad kv swaps etc etc

Personally, I don't see why you would want a J-Tag anymore? The games you can host on are so outdated that you could get lobbies without having to host yourself. They may overheat or get permanently banned. Also, the next-gen consoles are months away from release so you could save that money for that.
That is my opinion but to answer your question I would recommend talking to a Trusted Seller or someone who spends a lot of time in the modding section about what you should buy and then once you know what to get, go to a trusted seller for it. I would not recommend buying from anyone who doesn't have the "Trusted Seller" Badge. Just my advice to you.

Homebrew will always be fun regardless of new consoles. Hosting isn't all of it. I get to play a lot of the old gameboy games as I played as a kid on my rgh, along with everything from NES to ps1. It's basically every console in one.
OP: I wouldn't go overboard. Get yourself a decent rgh/r-jtag and a decent hdd. Keep it small, there is no need to get anything ridiculous.
