Thousands of motorists were stranded in their cars for nearly seven hours last night after a bomb scare forced police to close the Dartford Crossing in Kent in both directions.
Both the Dartford Tunnel and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge were closed after officers recovered a suspicious item on the M25 and arrested a man seen behaving unusually.
Police were called to the incident at 4pm and the road was not reopened until shortly before 11pm, leaving motorists trapped in nine-mile tailbacks.
It is thought he may have been on a coach and disembarked at the tolls. The man was arrested and a suspicious item found.
As part of their investigation, officers also stopped and searched a coach full of passengers in the A20 area of Dover at 6pm.
The vehicle was held on a small retail estate, surrounded by eight police vehicles, while the A20 was also closed.
