Surely it's better to have the operating system burnt to disk? but anyway 10 minutes is really not much of a wait.

You should never really force shutdown and especially not during an OS installation. Just give it some time, it's difficult to say if it's normal or not as it's entirely dependent on the hardware of your computer.

I've had hdd cleanups take hours; I wouldn't dare shutting down when the computer is running so intensely in the kernel ring unless I wanted to corrupt my hard drive. So I would recommend your friend doing the same and just giving it some time.

He should of burnt it to a disc and install it....
Also it could just be adding/coping all the stuff and installing parts of 7 if he's upgrading from say 7 premium to ultimate.
If he's going from like vista or XP it will take a lot longer, I reinstalled windows and it took me on a whole half hour or so.

It will take longer on a USB, as the read speeds are a lot slower than a USB3.0 or a DVD-R Disc.

Just tell him to wait, or burn it to a disc.
