From what I hear from others it has a lot of great functionality like changing your name and have custom banners with the gold forum

Your experience on the site will be better in general. You will have access to new things and new parts of the site.

Look at the Premium tab for more information. I've been gifted gold a number of times and I've enjoyed every minute of it.
