MKD wrote Internet in England isn't great, I'm meant to get 20MB and struggle to get 10 :L
But BT(provides all the copper lines for everyone in England's WI-FI) plan to have all the copper replaced with fiber by 2015
internet is dire in our country bro, i use talk talk 24mbps download speed 56kbps uploading... yeah downloading is pretty fast but if i wana stream live over twitch its near damn impossible... id like to get on virgin media fiber-optic but they dont supply to the more rural places which is a joke considering the biggest town thats closest (skipton) has virgin media... id use sky but there really bad my friend is on sky broadband and he`s meant to get 50mbps speeds but he can barely connect to xbox live and the lag is epic.... im very suprised that austrailia is so far behind especially being near japan/china and they boast the best internet in the world....

i once got told that BT even own all the fiber cable networks aswell... if you can remember NYNEX?? it was meant to be a joint operation between them and eventually BT took over the fiber network mainly due to NYNEX either goin bust or selling its rights, since then though NYNEX has gone on in different formats- ONDigital, cable and wireless, also the company that nearly sent the football league bust... theres been a few reincarnations.. BT is the governments property and when maggie thatcher privatized the phone lines she didnt sell but merely rented them out, the companies who leased them were given permission to adapt and install new lines (fiber cables) while BT still charged line rental... they have the fiber network for sure because sky has fiber cable deals and theres also BT infinity

BT is not government owned and hasn't been for quite some time :L They were government owned when they were joint with the Post Office, the two split off and BT is now a PLC

I live in a costal area in Australia and I'm pretty distant from major cities and I get up around 8mb - 13mb per second

Australia's Internet isn't as good as other parts in the world due to the government believing that 20mbps is fast enough and I'm pretty sure that's what we are working towards with a new broadband network coming in. So expect speeds of at least 20mbps and up to 50mbps in more urban areas.

Bottom line is, our Internet is crap due to the government thinking that our current speed is good enough
