The dvd tray power cord might be loose. However i don't recommend taking the console apart to diagnose it unless the warranty has expired.

Agreed please steal clear of this option, this can bring nothing but harm.

if its a slim with the touch xbox button, it works through complete the circuit so make sure its clean and if theres a wire damaged in it i know it will also cause this and its not a quick fix

If the warranty expired try opening the power supply and/or the Xbox...ussually dust builds up inside and causes an over heat...ONLY IF WARRANTY EXPIRED!

Maybe the cords are not plugged in all the way or tell him to try a different plug socket.

I would say it is most likely a wire shortage, a bad fan, or that the fan cannot get enough air circulating through it to be effective.

It happens to me every now and again. Personally I say leave it, if it only happens in the first ten minutes then there's really no need to take his xbox apart to fix it when it's not really that big of a deal.

So at this point, unscrew the screws connecting to the battery of the xbox (the power box) and leave the top off with a fan circulating air through it at all times. It happened to mine now i just have to leave the cap to the power cord off with a fan on it. And it keeps my room nice and cool ;). Hope it helps

Has he ever taken it apart? It souns like he has because I had the same problem, just take of the faceplate and you're good to go, but it's hard to swap to say disc 2 of a game or something like that, just dashboard and od it and it will work fine, you learn to get used to it......
