Well I have a couple of issues with my xbox. I don't want to get a new one as the new Xbox One's are coming out.
Here are my issues:
My xbox won't turn off after I press the power button, I have to manually unplug the power cord.
My discs won't be read by my disc drive. It's very rare and lucky I get a disc to work.
(This has been happening only been happening recently)
When I eject the disc it keeps spinning.
I was wondering how to trouble shoot these problems.
Should I call microsoft and see if I can get it repaired, and if so how much, can I get it for free?
Or should I try to jerry rig it, and if so how?
Any help would be appreciated +rep will be given.

If there are problems with reading a disc then it's most likely your laser.
I recently had the "Open Try Error". Simple to fix you just need to open the console up and get to the Laser. Once you have done this just clean the Laser up and remove any dust/dirt. Mine works every time now. There are plenty of Videos on Youtube that detail how to do this.
As for your other problems I have no information.

You're very unlikely to cause damage that will affect your Xbox. There are Videos on Youtube that tell you step by step on how to open it up, you just need to buy the correct screwdriver.
Put it this way, it sounds like your Xbox is on it's last legs anyway so anything you do is more likely going to be beneficial than not.
