Whattup TTG, I'm a 18 year old college kid and recently i've been so drawn into music and producing it that I really think i want to make it my career. Not rapping or singing or anything vocally cuz im shit at that but i want to produce music and make it into a career. anyone got any tips for me as i start this journey? I got FL studio and I've been making a few experimental beats using all the plug ins on the demo version and i plan on getting the full version and a keyboard and whatever else i need to make this possible. So i guess i'm just asking you guys if anyone has tips / tricks for me while producing? Cuz im literally brand new to this and anything is goin to be helpful Thanks TTG

You need to be very original. Don't use the same tempo as everyone else. I have made about 10 songs over the past year with my version of FL. It does take a lot of time to get used to everything. So, just be ready for haters. Goo luck man. <3

dont be afraid to experiment, keep an open mind...
you'll learn the most by making the most mistakes...
its a real fickle area, but if you stay determined and don't loose the love for music... you'll be fine

If there's one bit of advice I can give you, it's this:
BE YOURSELF.

This sounds stupid, but a friend of mine went into rapping and he puts on an american accent, uses beats that aren't anything like him - quite frankly he's dreadful but if he was himself it would be so much better.

Also, if you're really going to go for it;

  • Try find a music technology course
  • Make a YouTube account with your work on it as a portfolio

That's all that I have got, so I hope it helped!
If you do make a YouTube channel, message me on YouTube - "Oheymate"
I'll give you a shout-out and I will try help you along your way!

Good luck!

Hey man. I make my own songs, but Im a metal guitarist/bassist. Even though our genres are on the complete opposite sides of the spectrum, Ill be here if you have any questions on recording or if you want to send me something I can take a look at it and give you any pointers if you would want some constructive criticism before you publish something.

So, in regards to creating your own sound:

One of the best metal bands of all time, Pantera. Phil Anselmo said, the best way to get famous is to copy the crap out of your favorite bands. Now, obviously he doesnt mean that to a tee, but you have your influences. Dont be afraid to be who you wanna be, but also dont be a mirror of another artist, and dont make cliche songs (as in nearly every single crap metalcore band of today). Its the ones that are truly progressive and revolutionary (Meshuggah/Periphery ) that make their marks.

Now judging by what you say because you dont want to sing, it seems like you want to be along the lines of an audio-engineer? If so, start off VERY small right now. Learn your basic EQ (parametric bands and stuff along those lines) just to get an idea of what even the most basic of EQ can do to a piece of audio. Then get bigger and bigger. Take some classes or watch some videos online. Then if this is really what you want to do, obviously there are college degrees for audio engineering etc.

I also recommend you learn to use MIDI, and I also suggest that instead of using FL Studio, you should use Reaper. Its free, and in my opinion, is much better than FL.

hey man i really appreciate it. Is there anyway you could send me a link to a download of Reaper? That'd be sweet and i also heard to try and recreate your favorite songs to get better and better at the understanding of how to use everything so I will for sure be doing that. Thanks for your insight

Be you. Once you feel that you have mastered your beats to the best of your ability, look around and contact some people. For example, you can send an email to a famous beat producer asking for tips, or you can email a small-time producer asking to see if he can score you any opportunities. Good luck man!
