I'm on a budget so was going to buy Corsair Vengeance 4gb single channel RAM for now then by another stick when I have more money. Does that work the same as buying a dual channel 2x4gb
kit or do i have to buy the kit separate ?

Yes, that will work fine. It will operate at dual channel speeds when you add another stick.

Just to add, make sure that you buy the same stick when you buy another or compatibility may be an issue.

+1. If not the same model, then the same speeds and timings, e.g. DDR3 1600MHz and CAS 9.
