The only similarity between guns and knives it that they can be used to kill things.
Then again, so can baseball bats, hockey sticks, cricket bats, tennis rackets and snooker cues.
Should all of those be banned too?

Gun control didn't work in 1994 and it won't work now, criminals will still be able to get guns on the black market and law abiding citizens will have their one haven of protection taken from them.
The Columbine shooting even occurred during the last assault weapons ban.
It doesn't matter how much ammo a magazine holds either because they can and do just carry extra with them.

Gun crime will always be there, the only way to reduce it is to stop putting pressure on gangs that deal in drugs.

The first occurred in the 20's and 30's during the prohibition era, it drops when prohibition ends and rises again once Nixon introduced the war on drugs.
