Fraps is a very good software for screen recording.
There's another one named PlayClaw. It's sorta like Fraps but I find it gives you better frames per second than Fraps.

Everyone says Fraps is amazing but when it comes to my computer it's terrible, try getting a pirated version of Camtasia 8. I would give you a tut, but my TUT hasn't been accepted yet.

you could also try using FFSplit it is mainly used for streaming however you can also just save the files to your local hard drive

Upside's:
- Free
- Easy to use
- Supports many different resolutions including above 1080 if needed
- can save as .FLV, .MKV, .MP4
- can use 2 audio ports (e.g. Mic/Steromix)
- ability to add water marks or PiP (pic in pic display) such as web cams or to screens or what ever you need it for.

Downside's:
- cant record full screen games (so you have to play in windowed or borederless (which i do anyway))
