It's an interesting point and you should definitely watch a film called 'Fight Club', it goes very deep into this type of thinking.
I liked where you said, 'The less you have the less you have to worry about.'
However, my view on this and one of the key quotes from the film, "Once you've lost everything, you're free to do anything," would be that this should be rephrased into "Once you value nothing you're free to do anything."
While that may sound bad, it actually has very good connotations in modern day living.
For instance, If a homeless man came up to you and said "Give me 30GBP" you would probably say no.
If he said, "Give me 30GBP or I'm going to smash your car window." Then the situation gets tricky.
The man who values his car will likely fork over the 30GBP and walk away.
The man who thinks, "It's not the end of the world." and walks away will show the homeless man that he really has nothing to lose and that he isn't messing around.

This is a great quote on this type of thinking, "Before Battle, burn 2 of your largest ships and shoot the deserters."
While that might seem like madness, imagine the fear it would instil in the enemy, it would show that you have nothing to lose and the fear that is holding them back is the same fear that is driving their opposition forward.

So, while I agree that people rely on material goods too much, it is probably better instead to stop valuing these things so much instead of outright getting rid of them.

I've tried to live with this mindset lately, live your life the same but at the back of your head just keep thinking, 'No matter what happens, it's not the end of the world.'
It's so much less stressful and things become a lot clearer.

I need material goods to make myself feel good, and also because if I just sat around and ate, slept, and made shelters, life would be pretty boring.

Well we value material goods because they're worth something. They cost money.
We use them because it costs money and it's entertaining.
Then you go off topic and say people tell us to do this and that, like wtf.
This rant doesn't make much sense lol.

The reason people value their material goods is because some of them were bought with their hard earned money so therefore they see because because they feel it embodies their hard work so they can say hey I bought this and Im proud of it. Which would also lead to them tending to be overprotective of said material item. I know my statement is kind of all over the place but just my opinion

This is very true I completely agree, people also mis use the term need like you said we don't need a new Xbox or a computer those are wants
