I am planning to upgrade my PC as its getting out of date my current specs are:
AMD Athlon II x4 640 @3.0GHZ
4GB DDR3 RAM
XFX ATI HD6850
ASROCK N68C-S UCC
I have planned to upgrade my motherboard to a gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 and my CPU to a fx8350 and then upgrade my video card in another 3-6 months (probs a r9 270x/280x) however i am wondering if i get the GFX now what would be the bigger bottleneck having a r9 280X and an athlon or having a FX8350 and the HD6850
Thanks

Why not get the FX8320 instead or even a FX6300? Both would be a huge improvement over your current processor.

i have worked it out and i will have enough for the 8350 so i thought why not i'm also getting arctic cooler pro 7 rev 2.
still dont know which will be a bigger bottleneck. i guessed it would have been the processor

Well you'd need a new motherboard for that processor, so include that in any budget you have. Also bear in mind the new FX series of processors were not made with power efficiency so you'll need to tell us the make and model of your current power supply.
Easiest way to do this is, to tell us how much you have and a few of us will give you different ideas. Then you can ask question then make the decision for yourself.

My buddy's gtx 780 only gets bottle necked, when he has a Intel core i3 (2 core processor) so its extremely hard to bottle neck something. You shouldnt be worried about bottle necking it takes quit a bit of effort. (My freind had i guess de overclocked his i7 dont know exact but its somthing in the i7 family its an older one. anyways he put it down as low as intel core i3. So main part of the story, dont worry about bottle neckings its pretty hard to.
UPGRADE LIST
AMD FX 8320 or AMD FX 6300
R9 280X or HD RADEON 7970
im crappy with motherboards so i wont reccomend anythihng.
