Volunteer and help bag groceries, help out at the food shelf, just be a good person and do the little things that help out your community, it shows a lot of good stuff about you and you wil stand out to a lot of businesses.

Small things like advertising in your local paper, putting some ads in shops and notice boards around where you stay. Passing around business cards is also a good way of getting your name out there, as is word of mouth.
Social media can also be a good help, create a Facebook page and get some of your friends and family to "like" it and share it with some of their friends.
Some of the advertising may cost a little bit, but you have to speculate to accumulate sometimes.
It can be a struggle to get a foothold, but hang in there and keep persevering, hopefully it'll all come to fruition, sooner rather than later.

The main thing you have to do is not give up. A lot of people don't get noticed straight away so they give up. Don't do that.
Some techniques mentioned above would be really good - but just remember to keep trying and don't up!
