I an pretty sure I have done everything right, when I get to the step of entering the line [chmod 777 pool] it says (changing permissions of 'pool': operation not permitted. What is going on? Also, I am assuming the change permissions to 777 step is for iOS 6 above only.

you need to set permissions to 777(read write execute). it should be done on all ios versions.

yo dont have to set permissions to 775 you just set them to 777(read write execute) unless its not working with 777
