The benefit of rooting is gaining direct access to the root of the phone that was otherwise restricted in the stock rom. Having an Android phone boasts many benefits of open source, you can practically do anything to your heart's content. With rooting, you can also load your phone with a custom rom if you dislike the one on your phone. As well as getting free apps, changing the appearance of your phone, and much more. Just google up rooting and you will gain much more knowledge on how rooting works. The Nexus 5 is also an easy phone to root. Cheers.

That's a terrible idea. Not only are you ripping off the developer, but you open your phone up to malware and and other malicious things. Just support the people that make good apps and be an active part of the Android community.

Welcome to the Android community! There are loads of things you can do with an Android device that you can't do with an iPhone. For example, I have my Nexus 5 set up with Tasker, so when I leave for school in the morning, I connect my headphones and Shuttle+ (My music app) is opened and begins to shuffle my songs. Then when I arrive at school my phone connects to the wifi and automatically goes to vibrate and turns down the screen brightness. When I arrive back at home and connect to my wifi my pin lock is disabled and my volume and brightness is restored.
This is just one instance of many things possible with Tasker and loads of other apps.
Also, the Nexus 5 is a great device to start out with and you'll be very happy with it. I know I love mine.
And to rooting/unlocking you can look to my tutorial and explanation here. On my Nexus 5 I'm running OmniRom nightlies and rooted for adaway.

Is there anyway I will not be Leeching from the Devs, I understand that Androids have some malware, but I will only be buying apps, not leeching them so I shouldn't have to worry too much.

To be honest, you don't really have to worry about malware. Android has multiple layers of defense starting with stating permissions for all apps you go to install, scanning them, and being watched by Google. So you needn't worry about it, but I'd still err on the side of caution. And no, supporting devs is not leaching, it's actually very good to help them, even it's a free app please leave some feedback. It helps them a lot.
