I have an i7 3770k with a GTX 680.

So if you wanted, i'm sure a 780 would do you plenty.
I'm pretty sure a 770 would even do more than what you would be using it for.

There is no set GPU ~ CPU (proportionality). It all depends on what you'll need the PC to do. Do you need the i7? If so, you should know exactly what you'll be using it for (don't say gaming). If you need some gaming performance, you won't need a GTX 780, grab an R9 270X. If you do need gaming performance, grab the highest end GPU you can afford, that applies to all and any builds.

Usually an i7 based build indicates you'll be doing some content creation or some other type of work that will truly utilize the extra threads. With an i7, you should have an SSD, 16GB of RAM, and at the very least a 7870 GHz Ed/R9 270X.

Craigyy i do agree its one of the best cards for gaming.
But if people remember the 290x outdid the 780ti and nvidia had to bring the price down as it was more expensive than the 290x even though it outdid the 780ti.
But i will say u get different features with both. Both great cards no reason to not go for either of them.
But OP if u do plan on buying a 290x Wait until other companies bring out there version as the cooling for them at the moment is terrible and it runs at a very high temperture

The 780Ti gets more FPS in the majority of games @ 1080p. the 290X only comes really to life when playing @ 4k res, but as nearly all consumers don't have 4k displays, the 780Ti will be the best option. The 290(X) is an irrelevant card really, it makes no sense why you'd have one over even a standard 780.
