If someone does boot you offline it is a federal crime so if you know them then you can easily report them.

Yes it is very easy for someone to obtain your IP address online. It is even easier on Xbox live. As for what can happen, they can preform a DDoS attack on your IP, which basically floods your router with useless packets of data, therefore restricting internet data to be delivered, resulting in your router being "fried". Lel. Nobody ordinary can "fry" your router, In fact anybody can boot you off, it's as simple as downloading a packet sniffer, and using free trial IP stresses to do so. Then again, it is illegal so next time someone threatens you, just make them aware if they do, they will most likely have a law suit on their hands within the near future XD

It is do-able. I scare little kids on Xbox all the time. And when they say I can't do anything, then that's when I go and hit them offline to show them I'm a threat.

Frying someones modems takes alot of power from a host booter if you get host booted just reset your modem if its the same call ur isp but if you have a static ip witch means your ip does not change when u turn off and on your modem this means that people with enough power witch again would cost lots of $$ could fry your router if they keep hitting it and hitting it
Just look up The Term DDoS

Although, there is a stigma on the online gaming community that if someone has your IP, they could "ruin your internet". Which they can't.

It's actually very easy to ruin someone's internet by ddosing you are simply losing there connection to the internet for however so long there booter can handle. But ddrosing Witch is booting to the extreme could potentially fry your router and make you buy a new one.

Yes, it is possible. The majority of people just do it to scare you into giving them things. Just ignore them.

They can use a program to sniff packets from things like your xbox live profile and find your IP that way. There is literally nothing they can do to you other than flood your router forcing you offline for a few moments. If you do not have a static IP address you can just assign yourself a new one and if you do have a static IP address and wish to change it you would need to contact your ISP. Your IP address is literally just like your post code on the internet and there really isn't a whole lot that can be done with it. In short you are usually dealing with Script Bunnies who talk a lot of smack.
