VRAM is the RAM in your GPU.
VRAM stores frames that are going to be displayed on your screen.
If you have a high resolution eg. 1920x1080, then 2GB of VRAM will suffice.
Any higher resolution, then more VRAM is needed to get a higher frame-rate.

this explains why at my native res i get low frames i have a res of 2560x1600 but before i got this monitor i got such higher frames on my 1080p
i have a gtx 680 2gb

Not having enough VRAM may have been part of the performance drop, but you were also playing at about twice the resolution of 1080p.
Just like regular RAM, VRAM only improves performance if you can use it.

My understanding is that VRAM is good for multi-monitor support. Like if your running 3-5 monitors you should get anywhere from 4Gb-6Gb. The only 6GB I think is the titan and it doesn't have any better performance on games but it can handle multiple things. For example you could go with a 690 instead of a titan for 1-2 monitors and the 690 will blow the titan away on high intensive FPS games like DayZ and Battlefield
