Bomb disposal experts have destroyed a live WWII shell found in a man's home.

The device was discovered by fire crews who were on a routine call to a resident's home in Quarry Street in Woolton Village.

It is understood the fire service was fitting smoke alarms when the householder mentioned he had his grandad's bomb in the house.

Police officers quickly swooped on the area and called in the advice of a specialist team from HM Forces who assured them the device was safe to leave overnight.

The shell was taken to nearby woodland at Camp Hill this morning where a controlled explosion was carried out at around 9.45.

Earlier Bernadette OBoyle, landlady of the Victoria pub, said a regular had sparked the drama.

She said the fire brigade were at his home fitting smoke alarms when he happened to mention that he had his grandads World War II "bomb".

It is understood that the man used to keep the device in his shed until moving it into his kitchen.

Hes a lovely customer. He mentioned about his grandads bomb and it all kicked off, Bernadette said.

There were police everywhere.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "The WWII shell was removed from the house at 9.15am and was taken to Camp Hill where a controlled explosion was carried out.

"It was a live shell which was 30cm long and 3cm wide. It was kept at the scene overnight. The property was guarded and a cordon was put around the house overnight."
