First I'd like to say that I don't plan to use this computer for major gaming or anything.

I was wondering if it would make much of a difference if I upgraded the computer I'm on from 512mb of ram to 2gb of ram

Also 2gb of ram is the highest that this computer supports or I would go higher

I would suggest upgrading, 512mb is incredibly low for computers nowadays, it should make it faster as well.

What windows are you running? I'm sure anything above xp requires 1gb to install

Yes you will get a boost in performance as 512mb is just too low these days. For example my firefox is currently using up 520mb of ram and thats with a few tabs and a YT video. When RAM fills up your computer will swap to your HDD which will cause your PC to slow to a crawl as it can't access the files it needs as fast as RAM can.

If your PC only has that much RAM, it's probably so old that it couldn't even use much more. You should look into upgrading the whole thing. Old memory is generally more expensive than it's worth as well.
