Development
Development of Banished began in August 2011 and has been developed solely by Luke Hodorowicz under the studio name Shining Rock Software. The game was coded in C++ and the game engine was custom built for a zombie shooter. However, the game was later recycled and the engine re-purposed for the development of Banished. The game has been released with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions as well as DirectX 9 and 11. The developer has stated that the game will only be released on the Windows platform to begin with, but if the game is successful will look into modifying it for release on other platforms.
On 23 October 2013, the game was announced to be released late in 2013 and the developer stated he "should have a definite date to share soon".
On January 9th the developer announced that Banished would be released on 18 February 2014.

Gathering Food
When you're first starting out your first priority should be gathering food and building materials to do this I would recommend having half of your villagers doing labour, collecting materials and the other half building a Gatherers Hut, Fishing Dock and a Hunting Cabin and make sure that you put the Gatherers Hut and Hunting Cabin in a forested area.
Once you have built the food income sources you then want to put people to work, putting the maximum amount of people working there usually around 3/4 people. The more people you have the more food that will be collected and stored away.
As for making farming crops they are a good source of food income but I wouldn't recommend them when your starting out. Reason being is because different seasons will kill off crops and depending of the size of the crop field will also impact on how many workers you will need.

Warmth and Shelter
Once you have a fairly decent amount of food stored and you have a decent amount of materials you then want to start using the labourers as builders to build houses for your villagers to keep them warm and give them a place to eat. This is really important because obviously if you don't feed your people nor keep them warm then will start to die and once they're dead, they're dead. You will have to start again.
