NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball and its players have banned most home plate collisions but left open an exception if the catcher has the ball and is blocking the runner's direct path to home plate.

A new rule, 7.13, was adopted by MLB and the players' association on a one-year experimental basis, the sides said Monday.

A comment attached to the rule states "the failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runner's lowering of the shoulder, or the runner's pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation.''

A runner who violates the rule shall be declared out even if the catcher drops the ball. If a catcher blocks home plate without possession of the ball, the runner shall be safe. However, a catcher may block the plate to field a throw if the umpire determines the catcher could not have otherwise fielded the ball and that contact with the runner could not have been avoided.

Im indifferent. Im not a catcher and when I'm running towards home, people tend to get out of the way lol.

But for MLB purposes, i guess I'm alright with it. I hated watching good players like Buster Posey miss significant amount of time because of these plays.

I'm glad that they banned it. It's smart because you can literally paralyze someone if you hit them hard enough or just in the right spot.

I think its a great thing. I'm a catcher and I dont mind the collisions at home plate mainly because it usually never happens to me, however, i've seen some very bad collisions that caused players to be out for quite a bit at a time as a user also stated above.

It's a good thing they banned it, but they'll still do it. Just to many catchers or runners are getting hurt doing it. It is a career ending stunt.

I don`t think they should change the sport anymore.

It's a great idea for the rule. I play baseball and watching someone get ran over can seriously injure somebody. I know that pain.

Home plate collisions are terrible. I'm glad that they're finally banned. Sure they can show 'toughness' between players but is it really necessary. Buster Posey getting injured was probably was the reason why the Giants didn't really do much that year; in fact, Posey getting injured is the reason.

I don't want a star on my favorite team suffer from an injury just to get a run in or to prevent one. I rather lose a game than lose a player for a while. There are perfect plays to avoid those collisions. Posey sat in front of home plate, caught the ball, and then dove at the plate for a play a couple years ago which was smart. Ichiro not colliding with the catcher and was playing tag was smart as well and he tagged home before getting tagged out. Two plays that are reasonable for baseball and it saved potentially two injuries.

They're still really not banned. If the catcher has the ball and is blocking the plate they can still get trucked, which is how most collisions happen in my opinion.

I don't like it. It's part of the game. I understand it is to help protect players, but it changes the game too much. Much like Instant Replay, judgement calls make the game.
