Well my router is in my parents bedroom so I guess you can put it anywhere.
I use Virgin Media also.

Yes but... the fiber optic cable will be extremely long, can look messy if you don't ask them to hide it or pin it round the skirting and if you wish to have it upstairs they'll usually charge extra for there time.

Yes you can , but obviously if your using wireless then the further away it is then the signal/connection will be worse

As long as there is no a blackspot (where the signal goes dead) and it's near a wall. Yes you can have the router anywhere.

You also said 'Mom', and if you never heard of it.. You clearly aren't British.

Anyhow, it does work in any house, make sure it isn't blocked though the router.
Mine was and I would get 1 bar signal upstairs. Moved it a bit, now 3-4 bars and it works fab.

You can ask the Virgin media person about this and they'll tell you, they'll probably ask you where you want the router.

I have Virgin Media fiber obtics and I can tell you as long as there a connection point near by you can put it where ever you want. For example, mine is in my bedroom.
