Hi guys, I'm a complete pc n00b and need some help with my pc! I am currently running a ASRock N68C-S UCC mobo and an AMD phenom x4 9850, pretty simple, I know... The thing is, since I bought it the pc has been running ddr2 ram, I'm wanting to step up a little and get DDR3, could you help me out with some compatible RAM? Wanting at least 4gb and don't fancy paying the Earth!

Thanks in advance

You cannot use DDR3 RAM in a DDR2 board, the pins are completely different. If you want to upgrade your RAM to DDR3, you'll need to upgrade your motherboard and possibly CPU along with it.

But you can always add more DDR2 to your board.

Yeah that's true, you're basically going to have to upgrade your machine if you want DDR3.

You'll only need to upgrade your CPU. Your board will support DDR3 Ram(1600 / 1333 / 1066 / 800 mhz), but only if you install an AM3+ Socket CPU.

For example, you could buy

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Which would allow you to upgrade to DDR3 RAM.

The board supports AM2, AM2+, and AM3 CPUs, not AM3+. It has two lanes for DDR2 and two for DDR3. If you want to use DDR3, you need an AM3 CPU.

Well I never, I have never seen a board which supports bot DDR2 and DDR3 RAR before...

But ok, yes you can buy and DDR3 160MHz RAM and it will work. You don't need a CPU upgrade, but it will improve speeds massively.

The 9850 is an AM2+ CPU so it's still only compatible with DDR2.

Are you 100% sure of this? The only reason I'd rather have DDR3 is the price difference! haha

If needs be I'd rather spend the extra cash on 2 x 4gb ddr2 and not have to faf around changing CPUs

I didn't realize AM2+ didn't support DDR3 RAM, so yes, to use DDR3 you will need a CPU upgrade (Not the FX CPU above).
