Hi all

I just built my first pc and everything is working great expect.. the ram

I have instaled 2 x 4gigs of ram and when i boot up win 7 64-bit i go to home it says 8gig installed 3.99 useable

Any ideas on how to fix this? or can someone point me in the right direction

32bit version of windows is limited to 3.5GB of RAM, even if you have more (like you) only 3.5 will be usable, the 280mb diffrence in your case will probably be that 280mb are for video memory.

64bit version of windows can use 3.5 or more depending on version of windows.

Make sure you installed windows 64 bit. I remember I accidently installed 32 one time and didnt realize it.
