My dad has asked me to try get a price for upgrading an old desktop machine he has. He currently has a 1 core AMD at 1.87GHz(ouch) and its obviously needing replaced. However since he doesn't want to waste money on a new prebuilt, after seeing what I get with a custom built, he was thinking of upgrading just the Mobo/RAM/CPU. I said this should be okay however he would have to check the PSU could handle the new hardware, and I recommended just getting a new PSU entirely. He will be using it for internet and iTunes(we all hate it). I was thinking of an i5 3330 so he has quad core performance(which I think all PC's have these days) and a cheap motherboard, and 4GB of 1333MHz RAM. Just looking for opinions on cheaper AMD routes and bear in mind he WONT get a dedi GPU.

Yes but he wants to keep the same PSU, I advised against it, and the same hard drive. I have explained to him that a slow outdated hard drive could be a limiting factor in terms of performance. Also the currency is GBP, with a low budget.

A whole new system for what he will use it for can be made for a couple hundred.
A decent second hand pre-built for the same

There is no discreet graphics card in that build.

Alexyy wrote With a build that old it would be more beneficial to replace the whole lot.
How much do you have to spend on it?

Thanks for the quick response. It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but he wont want to spend 300 on an entirely new system. I could try to convince him, but he would just say its not worth it for him. I suppose if you were to remove the hard drive,PSU and chassis, it would come to 200 so I will definitely mention it to him, but I just want to know why you decided to suggest an APU, if he wont be using anything even slightly graphically intensive?

As far as I'm aware, this should be absolutely fine for basic internet usage;

There wouldn't be much point in upgrading a PC that old. It would be much easier and better to just built a new PC at a low cost. Depending on how much storage your current HDD has and how fast it is, you could possibly just use that instead of purchasing a new one. You could also possibly just use the same case, depending on the size of it. I would highly recommend a new PSU. If you were to use the same case and HDD, my build would only cost you 160GBP.
