LiNK is nothing like free XBL at all. LiNK lets players with modified consoles connect and game together. It is impossible to play on XBL with a modified console, unless you purchase time on a server or a close friend of someone who works on a server like XBLSE or XBLH.

I'm not too sure in all honesty. It's been a while since I've taken a modified console online. They are all a bit shady so I'd rather not deal with XBLSE or XBLH. It could be down, it may not. Regardless, LiNK is nothing like free XBL..

Depends on your exact console, dashboard version and whatnot, but on the cheapest end about $40 and about $90 on the very high end.

Just make sure you do a proper job when you JTAG, find a tutorial and all of the requirements.
