Can't you overclock the K?

The differnce is one you can overclock which is the K series processor.

Yes, that's right, also do you need the hyper-threading? You could just get an i5.

I was looking more at future proofing my system, as I have OEM windows a motherboard switch to a haswell cpu I am not considering. So I thought why not get one of the best last gen intel cpus'.

You'd be better going with an i5 CPU and upgrading another component of your PC as well. The i7 is actually going to perform slightly worse than the i5 in some games, beieve it or not. The K series of CPU are OC'able and the 3770K has a little better performance over the 3770 but not very much. You also need a motherboard which supports overclocking to even be able to OC. A 3770K would be useless without the right mobo as it would simply be a dearer 3770.

I already have a i5 3550 and a 780ti so I was looking to just save up like I mentioned before, so would it be better just to stay with my i5?

Well, honestly, if you have the money and are looking to upgrade, it's probably worth upgrading. Most games dont make use of the i7's hyperthreading so it performs the same as an i5 in a lot of cases. Although, the i7 will be better for multi-tasking, rendering and editing, it's also more "future-proof".
