I have a Toshiba satellite C55D-A5021 and every time i turn the computer on it says checking media failed then no bootable device restart system. If there is anyway of fixing this without replacing the harddrive please let me know. I have tried taking the harddrive out and putting back in and that did not work please help!
Also how can i tell if the harddrive is dead?

You can put a finger onto the harddrive case when the laptop is on, and if you feel it start to spin when you press the power button then its working.
If you've removed the hard drive then i would go into the BIOS and see if it actually appears under the boot list.

You can re install you operating system, Through a flash drive or just buy the CD, did you wipe anything on it? Are all the cords from your HDD fully intact because, Before my computer broke I had severed, i did not even sever it there was a small cut in it and it would not read!

Use a bootable Windows install flash drive or DVD to run startup repair.
Download the tool and follow the instructions here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
You can find Windows disk images provided by Microsoft here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
I'm assuming you're using Windows 7.
