I use a £10 soldering iron I purchased from a hardware shop round the corner from my old house and all the consoles that I have modified myself have turned out fine. I've only ever used one clone chip and it worked perfectly. I don't reflow/reball, I only purchase consoles which are in full working condition or if they need fixing, I send them to a friend.

If you think a clone tx chip will fry your cpu I think you need to re-evaluate a lot of your knowledge on modding. 99.5% of the time you see reports of an issue with a clone chip, its the installer NOT the chip. Hell some of the clones out there probably come from the same place xecuters chips do.
Besides the fact of that, I recommend looking into a soldering iron with adjustable temperature. I used to use the Weller WES51, and a while back I picked up a Hakko FX-888D. But most importantly, the soldering iron will only cover 20% of your soldering skills...The rest is up to the user with practice. I recommend avoiding cheap irons from radioshack because you will only make learning harder on yourself!

Thank You all for cooperating. It seems the majority of you are using top tier brands like Weller, Hakko, Aoyue, or Bird for your soldering and reworking needs. May I ask why? I mean why not use a Chinese clone of the product?

Most likely because soldering work actually makes a difference. As long as you buy a working chip, you will be fine if you can solder properly. Buying a crappy soldering iron that doesn't work, wouldn't help. The same as buying a crappy clone chip that doesn't work, wouldn't help. Fact is, these "clone" chips do work, and they work just as well, sometimes better than genuine T-X products. I use a crappy 10 soldering iron which isn't of a know, quality brand but it still does the job and my soldering is still fine.
