I'm not sure which generation it is (and there are too many scratches to read the model no.)

Is there a way to do this without wiping everything off it as I haven't been on it in a few years and I would like to see whats on it. Thanks in advance

There are a lot of tuts on youtube you could try them!

I'm sure one will work, i just quickly searched and there seem to be loads, such as putting it in dfu mode backing it up first. Just check them out

No, I don't think any of those methods work. Only thing you can do is a complete factory restore.

There is one program I have heard of that might work called Gecko iPhone Toolkit or something along those lines. Haven't personally tried it but supposedly it can bypass the lock code on A4 devices.

Restoring it to factory settings is the correct way to do it though.
