Intel did take the lead in per core performance, power usage efficiency and manufacturing processes. AMD typically piles on the cores, which in an ideal world everything would be made for lots of cores but it ist. Needless to say, tasks like rendering and encrypting sometimes do favour AMD's cores.
It's all about buying a cheaper AMD processor, then clocking it up to near Intel speeds. Both processors will run the games, as GPU's limit games more these days.
