A dialog box pops up saying Steam needs to be online to update, i googled this and apparently I need to copy the steam directory from a windows 7 laptop or some shit, i don't have that, is there another fix?

Delete all of the files in this folder except:
- \Steamapps\ folder
- Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)
Restart your computer.
Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

This is what a page on the Steam support page suggests, it says the issue is commonly caused by third party applications.
